How a WAV becomes an MP3
WAV is a RIFF container holding uncompressed Linear PCM, which is about as close to raw sound as a file gets. Nothing has been analysed, predicted or thrown away. That is why WAV files are enormous, and the size is entirely predictable: sample rate multiplied by bit depth multiplied by channel count. CD-quality stereo, 44.1 kHz at 16-bit, works out at 1,411 kbps no matter what the recording contains, whether that is a symphony or ten minutes of silence.
MP3 works the other way around. The LAME encoder runs a psychoacoustic model over the audio, decides which parts of the signal your ear will not notice being removed, and spends its bits on what is left. At a constant 192 kbps that is roughly a seven to one reduction against CD-quality stereo, and closer to twelve to one against a 48 kHz 24-bit session file. The sample rate and channel layout are preserved, so a 48 kHz stereo master comes out 48 kHz stereo and a mono voiceover stays mono.
This is the one conversion in the set where you are definitely losing something real, because the source was genuinely lossless. Whether it matters depends entirely on the material. On speech, and that means podcasts, interviews, voiceover, lectures and audiobooks, 192 kbps is transparent to essentially everybody. On dense music through good headphones a careful listener may occasionally pick something up. If the WAV is a master you will edit again later, convert a copy and keep the WAV.

- The RIFF 4GB ceiling
- WAV stores its chunk sizes in 32-bit fields, so the format itself cannot properly describe a file over 4GB. Recorders that run past it either split the recording automatically or write a technically broken file. If you have a WAV that large, it needs splitting in an editor before anything will read it reliably.
- Output format
- MP3 at a constant 192 kbps, encoded with LAME. The bitrate is fixed and cannot be selected.
- Can I get 320 kbps?
- Not here. The output is 192 kbps for every file. On speech there is no audible difference between the two, and on music the gap is small enough that most listeners cannot identify it in a blind test. If you need 320 kbps or genuine archival quality, the honest answer is to keep the WAV rather than encode it harder.
- Sample rate and channels
- Preserved from the source. A 96 kHz recording stays at 96 kHz. A mono file stays mono rather than being duplicated into two identical channels, which would double the size for nothing.
- Bit depth
- MP3 has no bit depth, because it is not a PCM format. The 16-bit or 24-bit distinction stops applying the moment the audio is encoded. What carries over is the sample rate and the channel count.
- Privacy
- No account is needed. Your WAV and the MP3 it produced are both deleted from the servers about 90 minutes after the job finishes.

WAV is lossless and MP3 is a compressed format, so converting does discard some data, but the output is MP3 at 192kbps, which is broadly transparent. Can I convert WAV to MP3 at 320 kbps? expand_more
Not on this tool. Every file comes out at a constant 192 kbps. That is a deliberate choice rather than a limitation we forgot to lift: on speech the two are indistinguishable, and on music the difference is small enough that most listeners cannot reliably identify it. If you genuinely need 320 kbps, or you are archiving rather than sharing, the better answer is to keep the WAV, because a bigger lossy file is still a lossy file.
How much smaller will the MP3 be than the WAV? expand_more
Around seven times smaller if the WAV is CD quality stereo, and around twelve times smaller if it is a 48 kHz 24-bit session file. A WAV has a fixed data rate that depends only on its sample rate, bit depth and channel count, so you can work it out in advance. Five minutes of CD-quality stereo is about 53MB as a WAV and about 7MB as a 192 kbps MP3.
Will I actually hear the difference? expand_more
On spoken word, essentially never. Podcasts, interviews, voiceover, lectures and audiobooks are all comfortably transparent at 192 kbps. On music it depends on the material and the listening setup: dense mixes with a lot of cymbal and reverb are where lossy encoding shows first, and even then it takes good headphones and a careful A to B comparison. On a phone speaker or in a car, no.
My WAV is larger than 2GB. What are my options? expand_more
Three of them. Pro raises the upload cap to 5GB, which covers most long recordings. Splitting the file in an audio editor and converting each part works on the free tier. Or, if the recording came off a device that was still writing when it passed 4GB, check it opens at all first: the WAV format stores its sizes in 32-bit fields and cannot correctly describe a file that large, so some recorders produce a broken file at that point.
What sample rate does the MP3 come out at? expand_more
The same one the WAV went in at. A 44.1 kHz WAV produces a 44.1 kHz MP3 and a 48 kHz WAV produces a 48 kHz MP3. Nothing is resampled. Bit depth is the one property that does not carry over, because MP3 is not a PCM format and has no bit depth to speak of.
