How a video becomes an MP3
A video file is a container holding several separate streams side by side, at minimum one for the picture and one for the sound. Converting to MP3 barely touches the video at all. VidClean opens the container, discards the video stream outright, and works only on the audio track. That is why the MP3 comes back a small fraction of the size you uploaded, and why the job finishes quickly even on a large file: no frames have to be decoded and re-encoded.
The audio inside is already compressed in almost every case, and which codec it uses depends on the container. An MP4 nearly always carries AAC. A MOV from an iPhone or a Mac carries AAC too, although one exported from a field recorder or a ProRes edit can carry uncompressed Linear PCM. MKV carries the widest range of anything: AC-3 and DTS from ripped discs, Opus or Vorbis from web sources, AAC from re-muxed camera footage. WebM carries Opus or Vorbis and nothing else. None of these can be renamed to .mp3 and expected to play, so the track is decoded and encoded again rather than copied across.
The output is MP3 at a constant 192 kbps, produced by the LAME encoder. The sample rate and the channel layout of the source are preserved, so a 48 kHz stereo soundtrack stays 48 kHz stereo and a mono voice recording stays mono. Since the source audio was already lossy in most cases, this is a second encode, which is what audio engineers mean by generation loss. On speech it is not something you will hear, and on music 192 kbps sits at roughly the bitrate streaming services use for their standard tier.

Why is the MP3 so much smaller than the video file? expand_more
Because the video stream is where nearly all the bytes were. In a typical recording the picture accounts for well over ninety per cent of the file and the sound for a few per cent. Converting to MP3 throws the picture away entirely, so a 1GB video routinely becomes an MP3 of a few tens of megabytes. Nothing has gone wrong if the result looks surprisingly small.
Does the MP3 sound worse than the audio inside the video? expand_more
Slightly, in principle. The audio in an MP4, MOV or WebM is already a lossy codec, so encoding it to MP3 is a second pass of lossy compression and a small amount of quality is lost each time. At 192 kbps that loss is inaudible on speech and very hard to hear on music. The exception is a MOV carrying uncompressed Linear PCM, where the MP3 is the first lossy encode and comes out cleaner than the typical case.
Does converting change the sample rate or turn stereo into mono? expand_more
Neither. The sample rate and the channel layout of the source audio are preserved exactly. A 48 kHz stereo track comes out as a 48 kHz stereo MP3, and a mono recording stays a single channel rather than being duplicated into two identical ones.
