About this stage
This is where a raw recording becomes something worth watching, and it is where most of the time goes. The work splits into two kinds. Cleanup is mechanical and largely decidable by software: removing the silence between sentences, cutting filler words, evening out levels, taking hum and room noise out of the audio, stabilizing a handheld shot. Editing is the part where judgement is required: what to keep, what order to put it in, where a cut lands. Some tools here do only one of those things very well and some try to do both. The cleanup tools are the ones that pay for themselves fastest, because they turn about 90 minutes of scrubbing through a timeline into a pass you review rather than perform. Every listing states its free tier and starting price with the date those were verified.
Choosing between these
Decide first whether you need a full editor or a cleanup pass. If your edit is mostly removing the bad parts of a good recording, a dedicated silence or filler remover will be faster and cheaper than a timeline editor. Check two things before paying: whether exports carry a watermark on the free plan, and whether the tool can hand its result to whatever you edit in afterwards.
